When Do I Call a Service Technician?

It is a cold winter day and the temperature in your home is uncomfortably cool.  You check the thermostat and find the set point is 73 degrees.  The thermometer shows that the room temperature is 68 degrees.  What do you do?  No one likes to spend their hard earned money unnecessarily so here are some tips to help you decide whether you need professional help.

1.         Double check the thermostat settings and switch positions.  Is the COOL-OFF-HEAT switch set to HEAT?  Is the temperature set point at least two degrees above the room temperature?

2.         Does the blower run? You should feel air blowing out of the registers.

3.         Is the filter clean? If you hear the blower running but do not feel air coming out of the registers, turn off the furnace and check your filter. Replace if dirty.  Turn power back on and check air flow again.

4.         If the blower will not run, make sure all the panels on the furnace are securely in place.  Next make sure the disconnect switch by the furnace is in the ON position.  Set the fan switch on the thermostat to ON.

5.         Check the circuit breaker or fuse.

Now, call Selvey Heating & Cooling at 765.296.3600.

A properly sized furnace in central Indiana will maintain the interior of the home at 70 degrees when the outdoor temperature reaches zero degrees by running continuously.  Therefore, a properly sized system may only be capable of maintaining the inside of the house at about 67 degrees when the outdoor temperature reaches -5 degrees.  Keep in mind that in our area the temperature is below 3 degrees F less than 1% of the time.

Having your furnace serviced and cleaned each fall or winter will help it work at peak efficiency and maximum capacity.  Just a little bit more heat may be all you need on that extra cold night to keep comfortable.
